Local Rides
Cedar Swamp
Beginner to Intermediate
Located in Wilbraham, the White Cedar Swamp trail network is a great place to get comfortable on your new bike. A mixture of winding cross-country single-track and open double-track caters to beginner and intermediate riders. Parking is available near the soccer fields at the Wilbraham Middle School or at the end of Washington Rd. This network is a popular spot within the local community; be respectful of others and share the trails.
Robinson State Park
Beginner to Intermediate
Robinson State Park is the one of the most enjoyable places to ride in south central Massachusetts. Robinson's 800+ acres offer a diversity of trails ranging from smooth fast flowing singletracks to slightly technical trails. What you'll remember most though are the miles of smooth fast trails. Robinson's location is responsible for this. It's located beside the Westfield River and much of the park consists of a series of drumlins. These drumlins were dropped there by the last glacier and the soil that makes them up contains few stones. Hence, the smooth fast trails.
As you ride you'll also notice that a lot of very professional trailwork has been done. Volunteers from Pioneer Valley NEMBA and the Friends of Robinson State Park working with the Park's staff are responsible for this. Expect to discover over 20 miles of trails at Robinson.
Park at the Robinson Park Elementary School via Begley St. for easy access to the trails.
Bear Hole
Beginner to Intermediate
Bear Hole is a 1400-acre conservation parcel in West Springfield. It contains the Bear Hole Reservoir and over 30 miles of trails. The trails range from wide flat gravel roads to tight twisty singletracks. Trails close to the water are remarkably stone free, almost like trails on Cape Cod. That’s because of a similar glacial sand dump.
The green trails are quite approachable, even for newer riders. They contain an almost uncountable number of twists and turns. The blue trails are harder, similar to the green trails but with more difficult sections. The black trails have yet to be mapped.
Bear Hole is a great place to explore. But don’t expect to do it all in one day.
Saw Mill
Intermediate to Advanced
Saw Mill Hills conservation area is a popular mountain biking, hiking, and trail running network located close to Northampton center.
These trails feature rocky terrain and technical A-lines that provide a challenge for experts but enough smoother terrain to suit any practiced rider.
The Saw Mill Hills Conservation area, commonly know as Sawmill consists of two sections. The other being Roberts-Hill. The primary trailhead is at: Col Lavalley Ln, Northampton, MA Taken together both properties host a vast network of trails with the Saw Mill Hills section being the largest. The trails are widely popular with mountain bikers, hikers trail runners and dog walkers. Check the map above. You could spend days exploring them all. And why not? Pioneer Vally NEMBA does a lot of trail work here, and you'll see the results of that when you explore.
Earl's Trails
Intermediate to Advanced
Earl's Trails in Hadley, Mass is well known for its large network of fast, flowy and buff trails. It is very close to Mount Holyoke Range Trail Network, which is just to the South of Earl's. Together these two ride areas can make for an epic day of riding.
Earl's Trails is served by two parking areas. The most popular parking area is on Chmura Road, at the north West lower end of the trail network. The second is at The Notch visitor Center which is on West Street to the South East or at the upper end of the trail network. Both are mapped on Trailforks. Also look for the photograph of the Ride Start Point heat map.
Bachelor Street
Intermediate to Advanced
How do you define a great day Mountain Biking? Is it miles of buff singletrack snaking up and down a forested loamy ridge or numerous rocky technical trails working their way up and down along a rocky spine. Which ever suits your fancy find it at Mount Holyoke Range State Park.
The northern side of the Notch features 'Earles' Trails' - Miles of smooth flowing single track - abounding in challenging climbs and swoopy descents. All envisioned and uncovered in the forest by the talented folks from Hampshire College. These trails are mostly not on State Forest land, but are incredibly fun.
There are two primary parking and access points. The first one is to the North of the Trail Network at The Notch Visitor Center at 1500 West St, Amherst. The second one is to the South of the Trail Network on Bachelor Street.
Facing Rock
Intermediate to Advanced
Located in Ludlow, Facing Rock Wildlife Management Area offers a diverse network of challenging trails. Chunky technical single-track, a number of rock slabs, and features make this a great place to hone your skills with A and B lines throughout. There are a number of trail intersections, and some trails, like Phased and Confused, will turn a quick ride into a long haul. Study the map and ride with a friend. Parking is available at the end of Bridle Rd. This trail system is supported by Western Mass NEMBA.
Shenipsit State Forest
Intermediate to Advanced
Shenipsit is a local favorite that offers a variety of terrain for riders of all abilities. The best place to park is the small lot on Galbraith Rd in Somers CT. This provides you with direct access to the trails covering Bald Mountain. Looking for a longer ride? Jump across 190 and ride the Soapstone Mountain trails, and while you're there stop by the Somers Fire Tower for a great view.
